    The Teaching Staff of Athens University of Economics and Business consists of:

    TEACHING AND RESEARCH STAFF

    The Teaching and Research Staff is composed of full Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors and currently-serving Lecturers.

    Their teaching activities take place within the framework of semester-long courses and include: a) the independent teaching of a course; b) the independent teaching of in-depth courses to small groups of students; c) laboratory exercises and, in general, applied exercises for students; d) the supervision of assignments or senior theses; and e) the organization of seminars or other similar activities aimed at consolidating students’ knowledge.

    Their research work includes basic or applied research; supervision of undergraduate theses, master’s dissertations and doctoral theses; and participation in conferences and research seminars.

    The Teaching Staff includes the Institution’s special categories of teaching and laboratory staff, which comprise its: Special Teaching Staff, Laboratory Teaching Staff, Special Technical Laboratory Staff, and Scientific Associates, as well as Adjunct Lecturers, Adjunct Teaching Staff and Instructors on secondment.

     

    EMERITUS PROFESSORS

    The title of Emeritus Professor is awarded to full Professors by decision of the University Senate, following the recommendation of the General Assembly of the relevant Department. It is a special academic procedure aimed at honoring retired professors who, during the course of their careers, produced distinguished scientific, teaching and research work which is recognized in Greece and abroad, with special emphasis placed on their contribution to their Department, the University, Science and society in general.

    Emeritus Professors are recognized as Professors of the Institution and are invited to all its events, as well as the events of their respective Schools and Departments. They receive, free of charge, various publications from their relevant Department and School as well as from the University; they are entitled to use the University Library; they can serve as principal investigators of research programmes or participate in them; they can teach in postgraduate programmes; and they can participate in academic life, giving speeches and lectures.

     

    SPECIAL TEACHING STAFF

    Members of the Special Teaching Staff category provide special educational and teaching work and may be assigned independent teaching. This category includes teaching staff who teach foreign languages or Greek as a foreign language, physical education, etc.

     

    LABORATORY TEACHING STAFF

    Members of the Laboratory Teaching Staff category carry out laboratory-applied teaching work, which consists primarily of conducting laboratory exercises as well as applied exercises in the sciences being taught. Laboratory Teaching Staff members with doctoral degrees may be assigned teaching activities including teaching in-depth courses to small groups of students and supervising senior theses or other assignments, under the supervision of Professors from the relevant School. By decision of the University Senate, which is taken following the recommendation of the General Assembly of the relevant Department, Laboratory Teaching Staff members may be assigned independent teaching.

     

    SPECIAL TECHNICAL LABORATORY STAFF

    Members of the Special Technical Laboratory Staff provide fundamental support services with respect to the overall operations of the University, offering specialized technical and laboratory services in order to ensure effective implementation of the University’s educational, research and applied work. By decision of the University Senate, which is taken following the recommendation of the General Assembly of the relevant Department, Special Technical Laboratory Staff members may be assigned independent teaching.

     

    SCIENTIFIC ASSOCIATES

    Scientific Associates perform ancillary teaching work that includes tutorials, supervising students’ internships or senior theses, as well as other activities aimed at consolidating students' knowledge.

     

    ADJUNCT LECTURERS

    a. Scientists of recognized scientific standing, who are either holders of a doctoral degree or doctoral candidates with exceptional technical experience, may be employed as Adjunct Lecturers by decision of the General Assembly and official approval of the Chairperson of the relevant Department, to carry out teaching, clinical and research work which is defined in the contract that is signed between the Adjunct Lecturer and the Rector of the relevant University. The terms of such contracts are strictly defined by Greek law. The job announcement listing the specific discipline is advertised following approval by the General Assembly of the relevant Department. The duration of such contracts is set for a period of up to one academic year, depending on the needs of the Department, and may be renewed or extended. Under no circumstances can the total duration of the contract exceed three academic years.

    b. Former members of the given University or of any other Greek or foreign University cannot be hired as Adjunct Lecturers, nor can retired employees of the wider public sector.

    c. Adjunct Lecturers may be employed either full-time or part-time. Full-time employment cannot exceed the limit of the number of weekly teaching hours provided by the Professors and Lecturers serving at the relevant University. If the employment is part-time, the required number of weekly teaching hours is adjusted according to the percentage of employment. Compensation of Adjunct Lecturers is paid through scholarships and resources obtained by the Department or through the University’s unused cash balances from previous fiscal years, without increasing the state subsidy to the given University, unless it comes from co-funded programmes.

     

    ADJUNCT TEACHING STAFF

    1. Scientists of recognized scientific standing, who are either holders of a doctoral degree or who have exceptional technical experience, may be employed upon official approval of the Rector or the corresponding governing body, which is issued following a decision by the relevant School, under a fixed-term contract, to carry out teaching, research, scientific or organizational work which is defined in the contract. These scientists, whose number cannot exceed the University’s total number of professors at all levels, have – throughout the duration of their contract and with respect to whatever work has been assigned to them – the duties and obligations that correspond to the level of professor to which their salary has been equated, based upon their qualifications.

    2. The duration of such contracts is for a period of up to one academic year, depending on the needs of the relevant Department, and may be renewed or extended. However, the total length of employment cannot exceed three academic years.

    3. The abovementioned scientists can be employed on a full-time or a part-time basis.

    4. Their monthly compensation is set, depending upon their qualifications, equal to the monthly salary of a regular or temporary professor, provided that their employment is full-time, or at a proportional rate if their employment is part-time.

    Moreover, based on current Greek laws, these scientists’ monthly or hourly wage, depending on the specific situation, is determined by a joint decision of the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, depending on the level at which they are hired and the work that is assigned to them.

     

    INSTRUCTORS ON SECONDMENT

    Instructors on secondment are elementary or secondary education teachers who are seconded to Athens University of Economics and Business.

     

    Athens University of Economics and Business, with its highly qualified Teaching Staff and its approximately 1,000 graduates every year, promotes knowledge and critical thinking, contributes to the advancement of scientific knowledge and the development of human resources and thus plays an important role in the development of the country.
